Siemens Healthineers Offers Real-Time Location via IoT and AI

Siemens Healthineers is leveraging Cognosos’s BLE and radio cloud-based sensors to provide room-level data about a hospital’s asset locations, and thus their status.

Siemens Healthineers has partnered with Cognosos to provide a real-time location system (RTLS) for tracking mobile assets in healthcare facilities. The solution utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity and Cognosos’s Bluetooth beacons to provide room-level data about asset locations and statuses. It is designed to be low-cost, easy to deploy, and follows a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model.

Ben Sperling, Siemens Healthineers North America’s Vice President of Enterprise Intelligence Solution, emphasized the company’s focus on operational transformation for its customers. Sperling states that they “classify Cognosos as part of the next generation of RTLS technologies, or RTLS 2.0.” This cuts the cost of the solution drastically, and allows customers to see their expected ROI in months instead of years. Cognosos’s CEO, Braxton Jarratt, goes on to explain how easy the beacons are to install, and how they work. Most of the data and analytics collected would not be possible if it wasn’t for the room-level accuracy.

The collected data helps improve operational efficiency and reduce costs by optimizing asset utilization, reducing labor spent on asset search, and decreasing preventative maintenance (PM) costs as each asset’s servicing history is tracked. Siemens Healthineers is now working with customers to deploy the RTLS solution, focusing on asset management and reducing operational bottlenecks by leveraging real-time and historical data about the flow of personnel and patients.
